Charles A. Smith, the 1994 Washington, D.C. Amateur and 30 Minute Chess Champion, has been a chess instructor since 2002. He has 40 years of chess playing experience, and is the Founder of Magic City Chess U, the umbrella entity under which all of his chess programs and activities are coordinated. He represented the city of Birmingham as Coach of the U.S. Youth Games Chess Team in Oakland (2008), Cocoa Beach, FL (2009), and Birmingham (2013), with all teams winning the gold medals. Smith has multiple national, regional, and state team and individual champions, and is widely regarded as the best chess coach in Alabama by both students, parents, and peers in the chess community. He attributes his success and that of his students to a new teaching methodology that he developed which allows students to understand the game and enjoy it immensely, producing players who are able to compete and win in a much shorter period of time than is normally required.
